Center Street Bridge Brands

As with the Kyle Parkway bridge before it, the newly reconstructed Center Street Bridge now

has a complete set of six cattle brand representations to pay tribute to Kyle’s ranching

heritage. The brands and brief descriptions of their heritage are listed below.

The Nance Family: The Nance family came to the area west of Kyle in the 1850’s, establishing a cotton gin, various mills and a meat packing plant. The late Robert Nance used this brand. The Hughson Family: Cecil Hughson was a Kyle area cattleman for many years and family members continue to ranch west of IH35. Cecil’s son “Tex” was a major league pitching star in the 1940’s for the Boston Red Sox.

Hills Brothers Farm: Hill Brothers Farm was one of the largest business enterprises in Kyle and Hays County for over 60 years. The farm originally began in the early 1900’s by Will & Ida Hill, second generation German immigrants. Will passed away in 1951 and the farm was taken over by brothers Adolph, Leroy and Marvin

The Groos Family: Several Branches of the Groos Family settled in Kyle in the city’s early years. Family patriarch, Johann, had been in charge of surveying the right of way for the I&GN Railroad when it was built from Austin to San Antonio. This is the brand of Will Groos who ran the Kyle Bank for a number of years.

D.H. Moore: David H. Moore was the father-in-law of the City's founder Fergus Kyle. D.H. owned much of what is now The City of Kyle. The brand of D.H. Moore dates back past the early 1900’s.

The Smith Family: Kirby Smith was one of the first African-American business owners in Kyle. Kirby owned and operated the Smith Store for a number of years around the turn of the century.
