Kerry B. Urbanowicz was hired as the Director of Parks and Recreation in November, 2003. He is responsible for day to day operations in the recreation office, maintaining the parks and city facilities and pool. He supervises a staff that operates many programs and special events in Kyle. Planning for and construction of new parks, trails and recreational facilities are also included in his job description, along with making sure the city buildings and the street right of ways are maintained.

Prior to his employment with the City, Kerry served on the Kyle Planning & Zoning Commission since 1994 and the Kyle Parks Board since 1999. During this time, Kerry has been involved with every residential and retail development as well as all the parks and trails in Kyle. Kerry’s prior employment experience was 19 years in the retail auto sales and 4 years as a secondary school teacher and coach in Leander and San Marcos.

Kerry grew up in San Antonio and spent his summer’s life guarding at Lackland AFB during the day and cooking at the first Wendy’s Restaurant in Texas at night. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos in 1980 with a B.S. in Secondary Education with teaching certificates in Physical Education, Health and Drivers Education. While attending SWT, Kerry was a member of the collegiate bowling team that traveled and competed against colleges from across the State of Texas and nationally. He has bowled two sanctioned 300 games in his career and has carried averages above 210.

Kerry married Shirley Whitaker in 1980 and they have lived in Kyle together since 1983. Shirley is a native of Kyle and was a 1974 graduate of Hays H.S. Their two daughters, Kimberly and Ashley have both graduated Hays High, in 2000 and 2007, respectfully. Kerry’s daughters are proud to be 4th generation Kylites.

Some would find it interesting that Kerry has umpired high school softball, earned Eagle Scout in 1973, appeared as an extra in George Lucas’s first movie Sugarland Express and played a bit part in the movie Piranha when it was filmed in San Marcos. Kerry enjoys fishing at the coast, swinging a golf club on a sunny day and playing backgammon when not working in the yard.
