Youth Fishing Clinic & Hooked On Fishing Derby

The City of Kyle Youth Fishing Clinic and Hooked Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Lake Kyle Park starting at 7 a.m. Fishing licenses will not be required to attend this event for guardians as the events coincide with state-wide free fishing day (the first Saturday in June) in the State of Texas.

This program open to the first 60 children that register online. Registration goes from Wednesday, April 3 to Sunday, May 26, or until the max number of participants have registered. All youth participants MUST be accompanied with an adult or guardian during the entire event.

Participants should bring sunscreen, a hat, bug spray, close-toed shoes or boots, camera, fishing gear as needed, drinks and snacks.

Event Schedule - June 1, 2024: 

  • 7:00am - Park Opens
  • 7:30am - Participant Check-in
  • 8:00am - Fishing Clinic
  • 9:30am - Award presentation
  • 10:00am - Fishing Derby
  • 11:00 am- Conclusion

Instructional Fishing Clinic Information:

The Instructional Fishing Clinic is open to children 6 years and older or entering 1st Grade to 12 years of age. Each child attending the clinic MUST be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge to attend or participate, but registration is required. To register, Click Here or visit TeamSideline.com/Kyle.  A Sign-in/Release form MUST be signed by a parent or guardian upon arrival.

Registration includes rod and reel combos. At the end of the Clinic, children will collect items for their tackle box. Sessions will be led by certified instructors from Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Sessions will be set up in the following 5 stations:                                                          

  • Basic Tackle and Fishing Knots: How to tie hooks and lures to a line, creating a bobber/sinker/hook rig.
  • Fish and Bait: Types of fish and bait that fish prefer.
  • Learn to Cast: Proper and safe way to cast your line.
  • Fishing Regulations and Safety: Knowing the rules and being safe while fishing makes this an enjoyable sport.
  • Ethics and Conservation: Why you should do the right things and know what the wrong things are as related to fishing and the outdoors.

Hooked On Fishing Derby

The Hooked on Fishing Derby is open to children 6 years of age or older at time of clinic or entering 1st grade in the Fall.  Children may not be older than 12 years of age on the date of the clinic.  Registration is required. To register, visit TeamSideline.com/Kyle. Participants that register for the Instructional Fishing Clinic will automatically be registered to participate in the Hooked on Fishing Derby.

Some bait, hooks and bobbers will be available. Participants may chose to use bait and/or artificial lures. Participants must abide by the following rules:

  • Catch & Release ONLY
  • Only one pole per person.
  • All participants must start at the same time (on the sound of the horn), must fish in Lake Kyle and must finish at the same time.

Each child attending the Hooked on Fishing Derby MUST be accompanied by an adult.Parents fishing with children do not need a Texas Freshwater Fishing License for the this event.
