In 1880, the original platting of Kyle included 2 acres in the center of town known as "Town Center". When the Krug Activity Center was built in the early 1900's, this area was designated as City Square Park. Today, park and open spaces in downtown now include the area and grounds around the Kyle Train Depot and City Hall.
On May 3, 2011, the Kyle City Council approved the request to rename City Square Park to Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park.
Many community events take place at Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park such as Santa's Arrival, Kyle Market Days and more!
In 2020, The Kyle City Council approved improvements to Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park. Improvements to the Mary Kyle Hartson Park (101 S Burleson St) included:
- Improved ADA access
- A 20-foot-wide promenade
- Expanded seating areas and picnic table areas
- Playground
- Educational rain garden.
The improvements were funded through settlement funds paid to the City of Kyle by Kinder Morgan under the 2019 settlement agreement between the City of Kyle and the Permian Highway Pipeline, LLC, and Kinder Morgan Texas Pipeline, LLC. The City of Kyle hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the park as well as Santa's Arrival on December 1, 2021.
