KYLE, TEXAS – On Tuesday, June 8, Governor Greg Abbott signed SCR 22, officially designating the City of Kyle as the Pie Capital of Texas.

State Sen. Donna Campbell and State Rep. Erin Zwiener, whose districts cover Kyle, brought forward the resolution in the 87th Texas Legislative Session in recognition of the City of Kyle’s commitment to, and reverence for all things pi(e).

"I was delighted to author this 'sweet' legislation, naming Kyle, Texas as the official Pie Capital of Texas, across the finish line this session," Sen. Campbell said.

Kyle’s pie history started 35 years ago when Julie Albertson opened the Texas Pie Company in downtown Kyle. Albertson used recipes passed down through generations of Texas family bakers to create her pies, and in 2016, the Texas Pie Company’s Original Pie Dough recipe was recognized by H-E-B, another Texas staple, as a Grand Prize Winner for the H‑E‑B's Quest for Texas' Best. Texas Pie Company’s pie dough can now be found on H-E-B shelves all over Texas.

In 2018, the City of Kyle officially launched its branding initiative to become Pie Capital of Texas. The goal was to put Kyle on the map by highlighting one of the reasons why people already loved to visit — delicious pies — as well as give the city an identity the business community and residents could participate in and enjoy. Now Kyle has become home to many types of pie including pizza, empanadas, chili pie and chicken pot pie, just to name a few.

Kyle officially earned the trademark from the U.S. Patent and Trade Office as the Pie Capital of Texas in 2019. Since then, the city has launched several programs with pi(e) in mind, including CertiPIEd, an outreach program that encourages businesses, organizations and groups of all kinds to engage in the "Pie Capital of Texas" brand, as well as a first of its kind City-subsidized rideshare program called Uber Kyle $3.14 — the approximate value of π.

But pie is celebrated in all kinds of ways in Kyle — on the plate, in City programs, and in the sky! Each Labor Day weekend, dozens of beautiful hot air balloons ascend over Kyle for the annual Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival. The festival features live music, pie eating and baking contests, pie throwing, tethered hot air balloon rides, market vendors, a kids play area and fireworks. For more information on the 2021 festival, visit the Pie in the Sky Festival website

The City of Kyle is also a proud member of the American Pie Council and celebrates National Pie Day every Jan. 23 by passing out pies to hometown heroes as well as National Pi Day on March 14 by hosting a Pi recitation competition.

"I'm so excited about this designation for the City of Kyle,” Rep. Zwiener said. “The Pie Capital of Texas will be able to use its new title to bring the community together, stimulate the economy, and allow everyone to celebrate all things pie."

Before it was signed by Governor Abbott, the resolution was adopted by the Texas Senate on May 5, 2021, and the Texas House of Representatives on May 26, 2021. According to the resolution, Kyle will remain the Pie Capital of Texas until 2031.
