Kyle, Pie Capital of Texas

Kyle is the Pie Capital of Texas

The City of Kyle officially launched a branding initiative in January 2018 to put Kyle on the map. Then on  January 23, 2018, the mayor proclaimed the day as Pie Day in Kyle, which corresponds to National Pie Day. The city is also a proud member of the American Pie Council.

In December 2018, we learned that we earned the trademark, Pie Capital of Texas, from the US Patent and Trademark Office.

On Tuesday, June 8, 2021, Governor Greg Abbott signed SCR 22, officially designating the City of Kyle as the Pie Capital of Texas.  State Sen. Donna Campbell and State Rep. Erin Zwiener, whose districts cover Kyle, brought forward the resolution in the 87th Texas Legislative Session in recognition of the City of Kyle’s commitment to, and reverence for all things pi(e).

Why pie? Because pie is fun!!

As City Manager Scott Sellers told a group of local business owners, every city needs something on which to hang its hat. He recounted a story of seeing a group of tourists taking pictures near city hall. Sellers asked them, why are you in Kyle — what brought you here?

They wanted pictures of the iconic Kyle water tower (because a friend’s name was Kyle) and were then having lunch at the Texas Pie Company. And that story had been repeated over and over from other visitors and travelers for several years. Magazines and other publications had written about the pie in Kyle. Visitors were coming to town just for that!

Since people are already coming here for the pie, we thought, let’s capitalize on that momentum and go all in!

So we expanded the concept and added a little flair. So for Kyle, being the Pie Capital is not just about one kind of pie or one place. Kyle offers an array of pies, some savory, such as Frito pie and chicken pot pie, others sweet. Pie comes in many forms...pizza pie, shepherd's pie, moon pie, sweetie pie.

We embrace and celebrate all pie in Kyle including National Pie Day on January 23 and National Pi Day on March 14 (3.14).

We've also built our signature annual event around pie, calling it Kyle Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival. This two-day event takes place over Labor Day weekend and features spectacular hot air balloons, fantastic live music, tethered balloon rides, pie eating, pie baking and pie-throwing, as well as several kinds of pie to eat. The festival brings in about 12,000 guests who enjoy a fun-filled family-friendly weekend at beautiful Lake Kyle.

  • Kyle becomes a tourist destination
  • Increased foot traffic for businesses
  • Joint branding opportunities
  • Unified business community

For the community, it provides an identity, a way to bring folks together for pie-themed events and offers opportunities for civic and service organizations to get involved.
