Library Soap S.A.C.K. Donation Drive

Donate soap sacks at the library

Attention all crafters and community helpers! From December 1 – December 15, the library will be collecting soap and soap sacks, which will be donated to charitable organizations in Hays County serving unhoused people in your community.

What is a soap sack? It’s a hand crocheted or knitted sack in which you can store, transport, and use a bar of soap. See more about the Soap S.A.C.K. (Supporting A Community with Kindness) movement at their official website: https://www.soapsacks.com/

This is a great project for anyone, especially those who are looking for an easy first knitting/crochet project, or for veteran fiber artists who are looking for a good way to use up their yarn scraps. However, please note that all soap sacks must be made with 100% cotton or cotton/bamboo blend yarn. You can look at recommended yarns, crochet and knitting patterns, and other resources here: https://www.soapsacks.com/services/

If you’re not sure what your yarn is made from (and you’ve lost the label), you can run experiments to find out the composition. See more here: Identify Yarn

Guidelines:

All soap sacks MUST contain one UNOPENED box of bar soap.

All soap sacks MUST be made from 100% cotton or cotton/bamboo blend yarn.

Bar soaps that are marketed as better for sensitive skin are preferred, but any type of unopened bar soap will be accepted.

All soap sacks will be donated to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council and the Southside Community Center, both of which are in San Marcos.
