City of Kyle and Central Texas Food Bank Host Emergency Food Distribution

KYLE, TEXAS – KYLE, TEXAS – This week’s winter weather has caused issues and interruptions of services across Hays County. The City of Kyle has organized with partners across the region food distribution and water filling stations to help fill the need. 

Food Distributions  

The Central Texas Food Bank in partnership with the City of Kyle is hosting a Food Distribution on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Lehman High School, 1700 Lehman Rd.  

The Central Texas Food Bank will also be holding a Food Distribution at Del Valle High School, 5201 Ross Rd. in Del Valle, from 12-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 that Kyle residents can attend if they cannot attend the Kyle one. 

Central Texas residents facing food insecurity can drive to the events to receive a box of assorted produce, milk, and a protein box. Actual contents may vary depending on availability. All are welcome and no registration is required.   

In response to the public health crisis, Central Texas Food Bank distributions have been converted to a drive-thru model and volunteers place food into each vehicle’s trunk. The food bank is asking that each household only send one person to the event, and that all attendees come in vehicles — there will be no walk-up distribution — to adhere to social distancing requirements. 

Drivers will need to enter the Lehman High School Parking lot at the second entrance on Lehman Road (if heading East). Drivers will be directed to exit out of the same entrance.

Water Filling Station 

The City of Kyle is also hosting a Water Filling Station at Hays High School, 4800 Jack C Hays Trail, Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Residents are advised to bring their own container to fill and will be allowed up to 5 gallons per person.  

Hays High School is on a dedicated well and currently not under boil water notice, so all water is potable and can be consumed without boiling. Please consider if you are able, helping neighbors with delivery and finding containers. Planning is still underway for future sites. 

All who go to water distribution sites are asked to practice State and Local Orders regarding social distancing and using face coverings when out in public or interacting with those outside of their household.  

Water Alert & Boil Water Notices 

The City of Kyle’s water system is beginning to stabilize and water pressure is rising, but to fully restore water service and return to regular water use, the City is still asking residents to limit water use to emergencies only.  

Due to repetitive and prolonged power outages at various water production sites, as well as an extended loss of one of the City’s main water supplies that has caused the City’s water distribution system to drop below 20psi, the City of Kyle was required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to issue a system wide Boil Water Notice as of Feb. 17 at 4 p.m.  

Once the system is stabilized and has returned to normal water use, it will be approximately 48 hours until our boil water notice is lifted, as state-mandated testing requirements still need to be completed. 

Though there is no evidence of any contamination within the City’s water system, the city recommends that all water customers boil their water prior to consumption. This includes drinking, washing hands/face, brushing teeth, etc.   

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and making ice can be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.  

In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source.   

When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will alert customers that the water is safe for drinking in a similar manner.

Power Outages 

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas is out of emergency operations, and rotating outages have stopped. That means that if your power goes out or is out, it is a true outage, not a scheduled interruption. Please report outages by calling Pedernales Electric Cooperative at 888-883-3379 or via pec.smarthub.coop.
