NWS StormReady Certification

KYLE, TEXAS –– The National Weather Service has designated the City of Kyle as a StormReady® Community following City Council’s approval during the Tuesday, Jan. 16 Kyle City Council meeting.

The StormReady® program is part of NWS’s Weather-Ready Nation initiative to prepare the community for increasing vulnerability to extreme weather and water events. According to the NWS, Americans live in the most severe, weather-prone country on earth. The StormReady® program helps arm America’s communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property before, during and after the event.

To receive this recognition, the City of Kyle had to apply and certify that the city has taken the following action:

  • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center
  • Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public
  • Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally
  • Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars
  • Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.

StormReady® communities are better prepared to save lives from severe weather through advanced planning, education and awareness. The designation is accompanied by a change in the City’s Community Rating System Score, which can lead to a change in the flood insurance rate.

Kyle joins 117 communities and 64 counties in Texas with the designation. For more information on the National Weather Service’s StormReady® program, visit weather.gov/stormready/

Additionally, the City of Kyle Office of Emergency Management will host a Basic SKYWARN® severe weather training course on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 6-8PM at the Kyle Public Safety Center, 1700 Kohlers Crossing. The training is free to attend, and registration is not required. For more information, CLICK HERE.
