Ending the Silence is an engaging, evidence-based presentation by the National Alliance on Mental Illness that helps middle and high school aged youth learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions and what steps to take if you or a loved one are showing symptoms of a mental health condition.

 

This event is the first part of the Teen Mental Health Bootcamp, a challenge spanning the first week of the 2024 Summer Reading Program that provides resources and outlets for mental health. Everyone who attends ALL THREE boot camp events will receive a free fidget cube!

Seed Starting: Beginners' Gardening for Teens (Part 2 of Teen Mental Health Bootcamp)

Learn how to grow plants from seeds in this hands-on presentation from the Hays County Master Gardeners.

Sound Journey Meditation with Lux Solaris for ages 12+ (Part 3 of Teen Mental Health Bootcamp)

The Sound Journey takes us into a state of deep relaxation, effortless meditation, rest, and renewal.  Everyone aged 12 and up is invited to join Josephine as she plays unique and specialized instruments such as the gong, crystal and metal singing bowls, drums, and chimes to promote mental, emotional, and physical restoration. Teen Cosplay Contest & MiniCon

Show your stuff as a cosplayer! Both competitors and folks that want to pretend that they're at a real anime convention are welcome at this event. Ages 12-17 are eligible to compete in the cosplay contest—be sure to arrive early to register for the contest. Costumes must be at least 75% handmade by the contestant; contestants will be judged on construction, finishing, creativity, and presentation. The first-place prize for the Novice category is two badges to the Greater Austin Comic Con, and the first prize for the Advanced Category is two badges to DreamCon!

There will be activities, entertainment, photo ops, and snacks for competitors and bystanders!

Got worms? Learn how to compost with worms in this hands-on workshop for ages 11-17 from the Hays County Master Gardeners. Being eco-friendly is your excuse to come see some real worms up close and personal.

World-class juggling instructor Matt Tardy will provide a hands-on juggling workshop for everyone aged 12-17 looking to sharpen their minds and impress their friends. Juggling is not just a lot of fun. It’s also a skill that greatly develops focus, coordination, and perseverance.

Want to learn the absolute basics of making a video game? Based on the work of Lecturer Anne Winchell at Texas State, this engaging workshop for ages 10-17 will introduce the fundamentals of creative writing for video games and the use of Twine, a free, easy-to-use, open-source, text-based platform for game creation that can be used on a home computer.
