National Night Out - 2023

NNO 2023

The National Night Out event will be held throughout the community on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 6 p.m. until dark.  National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event held the first Tuesday of October.  The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.

The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in the communities, such as drug prevention, town watch/Neighborhood Watch, and other anti-crime efforts.  Initially communities held lights-on vigils.  Now, many communities hold block parties, festivals, and other events to help bring neighbors together.

National Night Out is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime activities.
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front door vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods 'celebrate' National Night Out with a variety of events and activities such as:

  • Block parties
  • Cookouts
  • Ice cream socials
  • Childrens games
  • Visits from local police and fire departments
  • Parades and exhibits
  • Flashlight walks
  • Contests
  • Youth programs
  • And much, much more.....

Throughout the evening, police officers, fire fighters, EMS personnel, members of the city staff and elected city leaders attend to visit with the community.  During the visit, community members have an informal opportunity to visit with the staff and leaders that represent and serve them. Additionally, children have an opportunity to visit with emergency responders, learn valuable safety information, and explore the emergency vehicles.
