Kyle City Secretary Amelia Sanchez is saying farewell after 22 years. In that time, she has seen a lot of change, both in the work she performed and the city itself.

“I started as a utility clerk in 1994,” she said. “That was when we were in the old Kyle City Hall.”

Kyle’s population at that time was about 5,000.

Sanchez spent about eight years in that position then transitioned to working for both utilities and permitting. Eventually she only worked in the permitting department as the Building Permits Coordinator.

City Hall moved around quite a bit in the early years of Sanchez’s career. At one point, she was in what is now the Kyle Police 911 dispatch center. She was also in a tiny stone building that is now the home of Hope and Love 4 Kids.

The current Kyle City Hall located at the intersection of Front and Center streets opened in 2006.

In 2007, Sanchez became the City Secretary after Minerva Falcon retired following more than 30 years of service to Kyle. Falcon hired Sanchez.

“I learned a lot from Minerva, including how best to help the citizens of the city and being a resource for the community,” she said.

As the city grew, Sanchez said the work of the City Secretary did, too.

“With more people comes more open records requests, more need for services and citizens being more involved in city government,” she said.

What was her favorite part of being Kyle City Secretary?

“I was proud to be in a position to help people, to direct them to the right department and get the services they need” she said. “I also made a lot of close friends here.”

At her retirement party in late April, several long-time employees spoke about Sanchez’s work at the City of Kyle, thanking her for her guidance and help.

Her encore career will be a part-time position as a Member Services Analyst for the Texas Municipal Retirement System. She also plans to spend more time at the beach with her husband.
